Truths about Headaches

Migraines can be a complicated subject and you may not have all the information when you say you have a migraine so we found some common myths people believe regarding headaches and put together the truths.

Myth #1: Headaches and Migraines are the same.

The truth is, however, that there are different kinds of headaches. The most common is the tension headache but there is also a sinus headache and a nighttime headache. Tension headaches differ from migraines in the sense that migraines are accompanied by nausea, vomiting or visual disturbances.

Myth #2: More stress, more headaches.

The truth is that a common headache is more often than not caused by the simple, every day annoyances like traffic or loud music. These things often cause you to clench your teeth or cause strain on your back triggering a headache.

Myth #3: Sugar and caffeine cause headaches.

The truth is low blood pressure causes headaches and caffeine can boost the power of painkillers including aspirin and acetaminophen.
Myth #4: The men to women ratio of getting headaches is the same.

The truth is that women get headaches for often than men. You may not have thought of this one but it is true.

Myth #5: Tension headaches go away after a few hours.

The truth is that a tension headache can last from minutes to days. But pain can subside by relaxation and massages.

Myth #6: Sinus headaches are caused by allergies.

The truth is that sinus headaches can be made worse by sinuses but aren’t necessarily caused by them. You can treat the allergies but this won’t treat the headache.

Myth #7: Nighttime headaches only occur at night.

The truth is this name is misleading. Lack of sleep is a headache trigger so these sorts of headaches begin at night at continue into the morning.
